Imagine entering a home and a soft whiff of serenity envelopes your senses and effortlessly dissolves the noise of the world around you. Vipul Sukhadia & Kruti Sukhadia, Principal Architects of Sharan Architecture + Design have attempted to manifest a semblance of stillness akin to this feeling in a residence titled Bonty Ketak, in Surat where the rhythm of urban life beats strongly. An embodiment of the owner’s taste, the 2800-sq-ft apartment echoes a modern interpretation of simplicity and minimalism. “Our approach was to honour the ever-evolving elegance of Japandi style while staying rooted to the elements of Indian design” reveal the architects. The more you gaze, the more you uncover — the eco-friendly lime wash texture, light wooden flooring, accents of repurposed railway sleeper wood and a rejuvenated neutral colour scheme. A collection of beguiling decor curations, absorbing artworks and furniture pieces find their place in this warm and spacious abode.

A Paragon Of Tranquillity

The word ‘flow’ comes to mind as you walk into this peaceful home that unfolds section by section. From the authoritative wooden main door in sight is a private lift, neatly concealed behind elegant panelling. As you exit the lift and set foot in the vestibule, your eyes are immediately drawn to a mural adorned with sculptural clay boats designed by Mango Art. Moving forward you discover a Pooja room strategically positioned near the entrance. Engraved with shlokas it upholds the family’s Jain beliefs and practices. The light-filled living room steals the show with its impressive span, where a basalt centre table becomes the pièce de résistance perched on top of an exquisite quadrated rug. The artisan-built furniture and decadent decor objects complement the fresh pops of soft pastels and invigorating greys.

The Social Epicentre

The owners envisioned a home that transcends personal comfort and becomes an epicentre for convivial gatherings and evening soirées. This foresight necessitated an expansive open-plan layout and ensured every corner offered an inviting ambience. The hotspot in this home is the balcony with a bar table crafted from reclaimed sleeper wood. It is set against an Indian basalt stone backdrop and an intriguing sculpture by Ranjan Narkar that ties the setup.

To bring the revelry indoors, the living room extends into an informal gathering enclave, subtly delineated by a stocked pantry. This cosy retreat is enlivened with fenestrations and replete with sophisticated custom-made furniture choices: a grey sectional sofa, curvaceous coffee table, and classic rattan chair seamlessly tied together by a Jaipur Rugs piece. Kruti Sukhadia says, “These relaxation zones are masterfully designed for everyone to enjoy and we made sure that the spaces serve the family today, and in years to come.”

A Lesson On Sustainability

The open-concept floor plan reveals a dining area adjacent to the living room and connected to a well-appointed kitchen. Being cognizant of slow living, the space pervades in earthy tones featuring a standout breakfast table crafted from sleek sleeper wood. The dark polished dining table is paired elegantly with rattan chairs for conversations and shared meals. Just beyond, a powder room is predominantly clad in muted grey tiles and the black ceiling is equipped with scintillating bathware. “Our design philosophy involves creating aesthetically pleasing and efficient spaces. From cutting-edge lighting solutions to the use of eco-friendly materials, sustainability is woven into the very fabric of our approach” the principal architects explain.

Remarkable Room Design

The bedrooms became a playground of Mrudali Joshi’s ingenuities, who worked as a senior designer on the project. Vipul Sukhadia says that these are the spaces the design team enjoyed planning the most. “We doused the son’s bedroom with a rustic brick-tiled wall and floor, on top of which sits a low-height platform bed. For the parent’s room, a four-poster bed with brass accents was built with intricate woodwork. The master bedroom features a modern bed with a headboard made of natural stone that is accentuated with light wooden flooring” he adds. Clean lines and soft textiles strike a perfect balance between design and comfort. Eloquent artworks from Shree Rama The Gallery are astutely dressed on the bed walls blending in perfectly with the soothing colour palette of each bedroom.

This home’s layout in its entirety scripts a lesson in charting an exemplary flow. Infused with lots of natural light and wrapped in modern-day comforts, “It is a celebration of Indian artisanship as every furniture piece is custom made, meticulously designed by us and executed by carpenters,” the architects confess and sum up.
