#DPExclusive: This Mumbai Home Is A Masterclass In Shape, Light, And Colour

Mumbai’s familiarity with parallel lines and harsh colours is undeniable—from train tracks to the lofty towers. In this bustling city and our daily routines, where we often overlook the subtle forces at work, a home emerges in earthy tones, with thoughtful details in every corner that invites you to pause and marvel. Breathing life into a tacit, imperceptible force—geometry—DesignHex crafts a 2,200-sq-ft. home against the bustling background of the Maximum City, where chaos and geometric monotony reign. Deriving a part of its name from the concept we all dreaded in school—Geometry—and part from a German word, to infuse international sensibilities, this home is aptly monikered ‘Geome Haus.’ “The combined title speaks to the duality of the design—where precise geometry and creative exploration intersect to create a home that is both sophisticated and inviting,” explains Shimona Bhansali, Principal Designer and founder of DesignHex. Drenched in subdued and vibrant hues, graphic patterns and textures, Geome Haus redraws every line, curve, and colour with precision and purpose that challenges how we perceive and experience space.

Beyond The Parallel Lines

Weary of the city’s relentless visual cacophony crowded with overwhelming sprawl of mindless development, a couple with two children sought a sanctuary which offered solace amidst serene spaces. In these fast-paced, contemporary city homes, a space with dominant architectural features often poses a risk of being too clinical or detached, potentially overshadowing its key function of facilitating human needs. For Bhansali, “The most challenging aspect of the home was the balance between bold geometries and a sense of warmth and comfort.” She reveals, “To overcome this, we ensured that the materials were warm and tactile, and we paid close attention to the scale of each room to make sure it didn’t feel overwhelming.” With an aesthetic rooted in holistic minimalism while also, telling another story through layers of patterns and pastel hues this home stands as a paradox. As Bhansali rightly notes, “It speaks to the precise, almost mathematical nature of the architecture, yet it also hints at the artistic freedom that geometry can offer when liberated from conventional constraints.

A Blueprint For Serene Living

From the very beginning, Bhansali fixated on the simple idea of rethinking what a home could be—about transforming rigid forms into a flexible, fluid narrative through uncanny elements. Consequently, a circular skylight crowns the living area, suffusing it with a golden glow—an ethereal embrace welcoming its inhabitants home, after the relentless cadence. As the family gathers together, the skylight orchestrates an interplay of shadows—thanks to the ebb and flow of light, casting fluid texture across the walls. Bhansali adds, “The circular skylight in the living room, which changes the mood of the room with every passing hour, is a standout feature.” 

In vernacular architecture, a verandah with a swing is often a place for repose and communal bonding. As one enters the living room a playful swing gently sways, nodding to the age-old notion of bonding and repose through sharing a wing. While blush-toned feature walls and vibrant illustrative rugs paired with plaid upholstery anchor the larger theme of geometry, they subtly speak about the visual symphony. In this gathering space, which balances minimalist elegance with geometric complexity, mirrors enhance the sense of space, while large French windows offer views of the cityscape and open to a balcony.

This idyllic retreat—offering glimpses of the skyline—is punctuated with cabana seating and verdure, perfect for moments of repose, where the buzz of the city fades away.

The designer believes design to be an evolving dialogue where space, form, and materiality interact seamlessly, these principles, are tactile in the home’s ability to shapeshift between function and aesthetics. A space materialises shrouded behind a pastel-hued partition as one moves deeper, away from a publicly accessible living area into the dining and kitchen zones. In the dining area, “the striped dining table mirrors the linearity found in the walls and floors,” hat tipping to the stripe-drenching trend while the tan-hued ‘Veev’ chairs nod to the timeless craftsmanship. 

This space exudes flamboyance, not with excess, but with intention marking the dazzling return of maximalism—exhibiting a layering of textures and shapes that come together with each element contributing its aesthetics to the overall composition. Bhansali’s design philosophy rings true here, “The importance of materials, textures, and the emotional experience of the space became paramount—leading to an intricate but purposeful layering of elements that would allow the geometry to breathe and evolve.” As conversations flow over shared meals in the dining area, a strategically placed window peeks, serving as a portal into the kitchen, allowing dialogue to spill effortlessly between the two spaces.

The kitchen is often a secluded room that confines the person cooking, but here it seamlessly integrates with the home’s geometric and organic design philosophy while maintaining a visual connection. Bhansali notes, “The sleek black kitchen juxtaposes with the striking dining table, with its geometric striped pattern and trefoil cylindrical legs, creating an atmosphere of refined modernity.” The transition from the dining to kitchen zones with natural materials like marble brings a sense of grounding and timelessness and the sleek black counters exude a contemporary vibe.

Curves, Lines, And Calculated Charm

Walking through the home, a subtle tension between calm and excitement is palpable—where each curve, line, and colour choice, is a deliberate note in a grand symphony called ‘spatial harmony’. For instance, the daughter’s bedroom, with blush-hued curves that sweep throughout the room in an uninterrupted flow, is a perfect blend of soothing and playful flamboyance, creating a space that is both whimsical and chic. Bhansali remarks, “The soft curves of the daughter’s bedroom recall the playful nature of youth without sacrificing sophistication.” 

To deviate from the rigid forms of geometry, the curves manifest as sculpted headboards, delightful lamps and a feature wall in the study nook—each element flowing effortlessly into the next, exuding a cohesive and playful vibe. “While geometric patterns undoubtedly form the backbone of the aesthetic, the overarching influence is the notion of balance and fluidity,” muses Bhansali. The room hums with chic vibrance, where a duo of Koalas peek impishly from behind the curves, while a voluptuous mirror and fluted, pink dressing table nestle within a nook, adding to the space’s functionality.

The often overlooked room—the bathroom, takes notes from the room’s fluid geometric narrative. Arched alcoves embellished with pink and grey mosaics echo the home’s signature curves, while an amorphous mirror adds a touch of fluidity. As Bhansali shares, “The design process was deeply iterative, engaging with the spatial relationships between rooms, ensuring that each transition between them was seamless and purposeful, yet allowed for a dynamic interplay of forms.” Further, these curves flow into the verdant AV room’s shelves cementing geometry’s hold on the house.

As one moves from the bathroom, the design’s fluidity shifts—leaving behind the soft curves and pastels, and entering the son’s bedroom, where geometric forms and intentional lines pay an ode to form. In this vibrant room, tessellations collude to orchestrate a structure, paying homage to the geometric theme. From the sculpted wardrobe handles to the striking headboard—every element is a corporeal reiteration of geometry’s role in our everyday lives. 

Bhansali further explains, “The son’s room contrasts bold primary colours with sophisticated accents,” referencing the deep blue tones punctuated by an unexpected pop of red—courtesy of the lamps, infusing the space with vivaciousness and chic. This unexpected pop of red subtly borrows from the emerging trend of colour theory where vibrant hues are deliberately paired with softer tones to prompt a physiological response of ‘dopamine’ amidst the room’s subdued palette. 

A Symphony Of Texture And Tones

In a world where minimalism once reigned supreme, this home unapologetically embraces maximalism—bold, curvaceous, and overflowing with personality. It serves as a manifesto for maximalism’s return, drenched in vibrant colours, textures, and design elements that break free from minimalism’s restraint. “Throughout the home, the colour palette ebbs and flows, shifting from bold statements in one room to subtler, calming hues in another, creating a sense of movement and surprise, yet always staying rooted in harmony,” Bhansali notes. Striking a balance between contrast and cohesion, natural materials like wood and marble are paired with textures such as fluted glass and CNC-cut patterns, emphasising the power of paradoxes.

The uncanny statement pieces dominate the space—from sculptural headboards to oversized lighting—while reflective surfaces enhance dramatic contrasts and craft an illusion of capriciousness. This home, drenched with earthy neutrals—taupe, grey, and soft whites—appearing in both structured and fluid forms orchestrates an interplay of light and shadow, tying every element together, ensuring seamless transitions where colour and form harmonize effortlessly.

Bhansali remarks, “(within the home) interplay of geometric exploration and organic design signals a synthesis of modern minimalism and natural elegance, bringing together both architectural precision and the comforting, ever-present beauty of nature.” From sculptural arches to geometric patterns the home choreographs shapes and forms with each curve, line and angle guiding the light and space. However, as this light shifts, the connection between form and function deepens, transforming the home into an ever-evolving work of art that is an ode to the ‘form follows function’ and vice-versa theory.
