DESIGN PATAKA # 23 – Bong Bong by Kumpal Vaid
Bengali Restaurant Bong Bong designed by Kumpal Vaid of Purple Backyard. Young vibrant Kumpal Vaid was asked to design Bandra, Mumbai restaurant Bong Bong. She decided to highlight the sights and sounds of Kolkatta from the 1960’s.
The Bengali household opens its doors to feed it customers. An iron gate allows you in. Sit inside the living or outside in the verandah. Large mural were sketched out and painted around the restaurant. Artist were brought in to execute all the ideas. The Kolkatta Howrah bridge is painted against an olive green background across the service duct. Love the hand rickshaw mural! The antique finishes were also given by the artists. Reds and greens are used throughout. Antiquated gadgets are placed around the restaurant. Regular boring service stations are replaced with antique cabinets found at flea markets. The doors were brought in from Kolkatta. Literally pulled off from a home. Colorful painted folding chairs. The walls outside are covered with grills. Creepers are being grown to cover the walls up. Hanging plants n different spots. Lots of greenery warming the space up. Kumpal Vaid has used indirect lighting in the space. Lighting it up with small lanterns and tea lights. Exposed brick walls and electric ducts in different areas. The logo looks more like a Bong Aunty Ninja!
We like the space overall. It comes together well. The aim of creating a homely Bengali Restuarant is achieved rather nicely. Looking forward to see what Kumpal has in store for us next.
