A Mumbai-based, high-end real lighting firm—Cona Electricals reached out to interior designer Tushar Mistry, founder and Principal Designer of Tushar Mistry Design Studio to conceptualise the interiors of its 1,800-square-foot office space. Known as The ‘Osum Project,’ the office reimagines what a typical workplace looks like. With its modern, minimalist and monochromatic look, this distinctive office in Mumbai feels like an extension of a futuristic and innovative space. While the interiors are minimalist, they feature Cona Electricals’ arresting lighting fixtures. The workspace was purposefully minimalist so that the focus remained on the lights.
This Mumbai office houses practical yet visually arresting furnishings and thoughtfully curated lighting fixtures. The office’s interiors feature sleek lines that are complemented by the curves of the furnishings. While it has a minimalist design aesthetic, it is also highly functional. A discerning palette of colours and materials and clean finishes give the interiors of this space a distinctive appeal. The colour palette comprises primarily white, black, and grey with hints of red and yellow that add pops of colour.
Upon entry, guests are greeted by a modern reception area with a sleek marble reception desk. After waiting in the reception area, guests are escorted to the Managing Director’s cabin room through the employees’ cubicles. The cubicle walls are fashioned with Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) designs cut in Corian solid surfaces. “What is important to be noted here is that the wall segment in particular took us a lot of time and effort to complete as we had to battle the problem of non-availability of raw materials owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the finished deCorian solid surfaces have been predominantly used in this project as they depict fine finishing. One look at the wire manager, the phone charger and the pen stand, all designed out of Corian material, on the tabletop, will show that these accessories blend effortlessly with the desks,” mentions Tushar Mistry, Principal Designer of Tushar Mistry Design Studio.
Arresting Interiors
The Managing Director’s cabin is set apart from the rest of the office by the use of a dark colour scheme of black, gold and red. Furthermore, the room’s highlights include its ceiling and accent wall with one-of-a-kind lighting elements. “One of the major challenges that we encountered was while doing the Managing Director’s cabin. For the ceiling, we envisaged something with curves and lines, which while looks simple and elegant is very tough to implement. Although many mediums such as red Corian, MDF, CNC cut and painted red were tested, they were far from what we wanted from that space. Finally, a small rope in my hand dropped the hint of using the most simplistic and tactful material—a white cotton rope to get the desired look. A white cotton rope was stained, hardened and varnished all over that gorgeously made for the spectacular ceiling look,” adds Tushar Mistry.
Moreover, since the client is a contemporary lighting company, the designer incorporated cutting-edge technology and eye-catching lighting fixtures in the interior design as well. “The client is a technology-driven company and thus, the design of this office space is technologically heavy with automation being the backbone. The cabinets finished up with Corian solid surfaces are embedded with sensors and open with the help of access cards. Thus, the entire lock and key look has been done away with in the design of staff lockers and cabinets resulting in an easy-to-use, classic, chic and clutter-free look. Everything here is designed on motion sensors, be it the lights, music or even the entry and exit. Finally, the flooring is a mix of marble dust, which has been worked on to give a matte look that is in sync with the rest of the office space,” concludes Tushar Mistry, Principal Designer of Tushar Mistry Design Studio.
This Mumbai office is not what comes to mind when we think of a lighting firm’s workspace. With this futuristic office, Tushar Mistry Design Studio aims to reimagine the way we inhabit and use our workspaces.
