HBO-hit Succession has returned for its fourth and final season, with all its trappings of stealth wealth that take the form of private jets, gorgeous vistas, and exquisite interiors. The premiere saw Kendall, Shiv, and Roman (played by Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, and Kieran Culkin respectively) fly to Nan Pierce’s (Cherry Jones) California mansion in a bid for her legacy media company. Through all the tense negotiations, we couldn’t help but admire Nan’s remarkable estate, that we now know to be the Peabody Estate in Santa Barbara, a.k.a Villa Solana. Its current owner is former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who bought it for $30.8 million in 2020.
Built in 1914, the grand estate was designed by politician and architect Francis Townsend Underhill, for a local businessman. From the mid-to-late 1950s, it served as a headquarters for the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, an institute visited by leaders like John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Henry Kissinger.
The sprawling 11-acre property is situated on a hilltop with stunning views of the ocean and the mountains, and the mansion itself is spread across 22,729 square feet. Elements like 17th-century French oak paneling, white Alabama marble, antique light fixtures, and limestone fireplaces bring forth an ethos of quiet luxury – a prominent theme in Succession. Nan’s home offers a fascinating insight into the WASP-y old money aesthetic, which is often meticulously manufactured with the likes of De Gournay wallpapers and Schumacher fabrics. It serves as an interesting foil to Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) Fifth Avenue New York townhouse which offers a more glamorous take on the stealth wealth sensibility.
