Design Pataki mourns the loss of B.V. Doshi, one of the greatest Indian architects of this generation who passed away on 24th January, 2023 at the age of 95. A visionary and a true champion of sustainable architecture. B.V. Doshi played a significant role in the evolution of architectural discourse in the country. His legacy will live on through his timeless structures across India, and through the countless lives he touched.

Born in Pune in 1927, B.V. Doshi graduated from the J.J. School of Architecture in Mumbai in 1954. He then went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was heavily influenced by the works of Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. Doshi had a long and illustrious career, spanning over six decades. He will be remembered for his commitment to creating structures that are deeply rooted in the Indian context, like the IIM Ahmedabad, Tagore Memorial Hall, and Amdavad Ni Gufa. Through the course of his lifetime, B.V. Doshi received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of India, and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Architects. In March 2018, B.V. Doshi was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, making him the first Indian to receive the honour.

B.V. Doshi will always be remembered as a true master of the craft, who left an indelible mark on the country’s architectural landscape.
