Look up #plantparenthood or #houseplantclub on Instagram and you will be transported to a virtual cornucopia of Hoyas, Philodendrons, and cacti, often in gorgeous maximal setups that evince a very specific urban jungle aesthetic. To a casual viewer, these would be nothing more than ‘pretty plant pictures’, but at the very foundation of them lie dedicated communities of indoor plant enthusiasts that have only been getting larger. This is hardly unexpected, given the events that have shaped the last two years. According to Gemma Riberti, Head of Interiors at global trend forecasting company WGSN, “Greenery will continue to have a central role within the home – as live plants; but also as patterns, shapes, and decorative elements that still evoke the great outdoors. People will increasingly want to bring the outdoors in, taking plant parenting and biophilic design to new heights.” From a design perspective, she tells us, “The “contemporary conservatory” is a look that will be trending, whether creating an all-over garden-inspired room with patterned wallpaper and wicker furniture, or simply styling a conservatory corner in a sunny location in the home.”
In India too, biophilic designs and plant-heavy interiors are on the rise, with the more Instagrammable Fiddle-leaf figs and Monsteras replacing the humble Areca palms and Money plants that had been household staples.
