Picture summer as a time for luxurious getaways that refresh both mind and body—whether it’s the captivating turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, a tropical haven in the Indian Ocean, or a peaceful mountain chalet in the Italian Alps. While these classic retreats remain timeless, the very idea of summer holidays is evolving as travel and hospitality undergo a transformative shift. Recent studies on travel trends highlight the growing prominence of sports, active adventures and wellness activities in vacation planning. According to a McKinsey report, a significant number of travellers are integrating fitness and sports into their trips, driven by a desire to enhance mental well-being and maintain physical health. This summer, journey where the thrill of sports meets the art of hospitality, discover retreats that blur the boundaries between the man-made and the natural, or one can step inside a hotel that was once the city’s most prominent landmark, peeling back centuries of history through thoughtful restoration. Above all, it’s about embracing the art of unhurried holidays—what the Italians call ‘villeggiatura.’ This concept refers to a prolonged stay in one place, whether at a seaside resort, a country villa, an urban hotel away from the buzz or a mountain retreat to enjoy the northern sun. DP puts together a guide to the latest hotel openings in some of the world’s most beautiful destinations, epitomizing the true essence of a summer break.

Nestled on the remote Anse Intendance Beach of Mahé Island, the newly opened Cheval Blanc Maison embodies an exceptional art de vivre. Art connoisseurs will find how every space in this island hotel seamlessly integrates art to emblazon the culture into its living spaces, offering a refreshing departure from the monotony of tropical-themed beach getaways. Designed by the world-renowned Belgian architect Jean-Michel Gathy, its 52 villas blend expansive spaces with contemporary lines inspired by traditional Creole houses. French artist Prune Nourry, known for her immersive sculptures, has created Cheval Blanc Seychelles’ signature artwork, ‘La Centauresse, ‘ a heroic warrior figure rising gracefully among the banyans.

Each villa offers expansive indoor and outdoor spaces, featuring spacious bathrooms with adjoining dressing rooms and thoughtfully designed living areas that flow seamlessly into a lush tropical patio. A common thread runs through the property—the popular Malagassy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa’s giant-size textile canvas artworks that engage a dialogue with the raw beauty of the surrounding nature. Inspiration meets artistry as French haute cuisine, Japanese influences, and Creole flavours harmonise across Cheval Blanc’s five restaurants. Enveloped by birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves, Cheval Blanc Spa by Guerlain seamlessly blends into its lush jungle surroundings. For sports enthusiasts, tennis and padel courts, with a surf simulator pool, ensure you can stay active and enjoy your favourite sports even while on a luxury holiday.

A mountain paradise might not be the first thing that comes to mind with Italy, but the Dolomites challenge that notion. With rugged peaks rivaling those of France and Switzerland, paired with world-class winter sports and summer adventures, this region is Italy’s newest hotspot for adventure lovers. Rosa Alpina, a classic mountain retreat, has offered its guests an unparalleled base for active adventures in Italy’s Unesco-protected alpine ranges. The story of this classic property began in 1939 when the Pizzinini family opened Rosa Alpina in the village of San Cassiano, nestled in the UNESCO-listed region of the Dolomites. This July, it will reopen as an Aman mountain retreat after an extensive remodel. The award-winning Belgian architect and interior designer Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects led the property’s refurbishment, reducing its original 52 suites to 50 while infusing Aman‘s signature design ethos—peace, understated elegance, and quiet luxury. Two Presidential Suites will join the existing Chalet Zeno, a private residence for up to six guests, offering the pinnacle of luxury and exclusivity.

Another addition is the private dining space for intimate celebrations. The wellness area features an outdoor pool, jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, and an enhanced treatment menu tailored to the new facilities. This region is a playground for active adventures. While winter in the mountains is all about skiing, summer unveils a different adventure. Nestled in the tiny village of San Cassiano, Aman Rosa Alpina serves as the perfect base to explore the surrounding countryside. Aman’s expert-led team curates mountain treks, explores the iconic Tre Cime de Lavaredo, delves into Alta Badia’s charm, and offers the thrill of Via Ferrata atop Cinque Torri.
